In March 2023, someone dropped ten photos of “top secret” pages into an argument on a Minecraft server. They were real, a federal case would later show: Pentagon briefings on the war in Ukraine. Forty days later, FBI agents arrested the man who had first shared them, a 21-year-old IT airman in the Air National Guard.
From court records, an FBI affidavit and the Air Force’s own investigation, we follow the photos back, copy by copy, to a locked room on a military base.
How to read our sources
In the film, a small dot lights up where a claim is made, then slides into the right margin and becomes a note: a number, the source and its year. That number is the number below. researchism.tv/how-top-secret-war-documents-ended-up-on-a-minecraft-server/#5 takes you straight to source 5.
The brightness of the dot is our certainty, the lamp code:
Lit: established. A court finding, an admission in a plea, an official record.
Half: reported or alleged. Indictments, prosecutors’ claims, press reports, an investigator’s own account.
Dark: unknown or unverified. We looked and could not confirm it.
The dot rates the claim as the film makes it. A line like “prosecutors said” can be lit: the record proves they said it, not that it is true. The dot’s shape tells you what kind of source it is:
primary recordsecondary: press or an investigatortestimony or our own estimate
Every source shows when it was published and when we last looked at it. “Accessed” is the day we retrieved and read it. “Link checked” is the day its link last opened for us. Where a site blocks automated checks, we say that the link was not confirmed.
Sources
The 3 sources numbered on screen, in order. Timecodes show where each number appears in the film; the small dot is its brightness at that moment.

Legal status
as of the last public court records shown in the film: Oct. 29, 2026
Status checked : no change since Oct. 29, 2026.
- Jack Teixeira pleaded guilty on Mar. 4, 2024, to six counts of willful retention and transmission of national defense information. #4 #19
- He was sentenced to 15 years in prison (180 months) on Nov. 12, 2024, followed by 3 years of supervised release; the judgment was entered Nov. 18, 2024. #8 #18
- At a court-martial on Mar. 13, 2025, he pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and was sentenced to a dishonorable discharge, with no added confinement. A punitive discharge takes effect only after appellate review; we found no public outcome of the automatic appeal. #14 #15
- The Federal Bureau of Prisons lists him in custody, with a projected release date of Jan. 22, 2036. In May 2025 he applied for a presidential pardon, ABC News reported; we found no public decision. #9 #16
The complaint, the indictment and the government’s filings were allegations when they were made. The facts in the film rest on what Teixeira admitted when he pleaded guilty and on what the court decided.
Members of his chat group, some of them minors, the people who reposted the photos and the teenager interviewed by the press are not named in the film or on this page; chat usernames in the film are invented. That is our choice.
What we checked on Oct. 30, 2026 (the evening of Oct. 29, Eastern Time): the docket of United States v. Teixeira on CourtListener / RECAP, where the latest public entry is dated Nov. 26, 2024 (CourtListener last refreshed this docket from the court on June 5, 2025), and the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator (in custody at USP Florence ADMAX, projected release Jan. 22, 2036). Sealed filings do not appear on CourtListener, we did not search PACER, the court’s paid records system, and the court-martial and its appeal are military proceedings outside these records.
Docket via CourtListener / RECAP: United States v. Teixeira, No. 1:23-cr-10159-IT (D. Mass.), case closed Nov. 18, 2024, latest public entry Nov. 26, 2024 (re-checked Oct. 30, 2026: no new public entries). Court records change; when they do, we update this box and log it below.
